Agriculture, Livelihood & Food Security

The purpose of the Agriculture, Livelihood & Food Security Program is to improve the food and nutrition security situation of pastoralist communities in the wake of increased climatic and economic shocks
Implementation strategy: Working closely with organized community groups, County government departments of agriculture, livestock and fisheries to facilitate communities to have an increased uptake of climate smart agriculture practices.
The program is meant to ensure the people are trained and become aware of existing alternatives and also to ensure there is adequate infrastructure that supports stable and secure food supply to the North Eastern region of Kenya and neighbouring Somali.
Key Result Areas
Result 1: Increased uptake of climate smart agriculture to enable communities diversify their sources food and income
Achievements made so far:
  • Through the provision of inputs, supported 500 pastoralists households undertake climate smart agriculture along the rivers Dawa and Tana. The inputs provided include: Fruit tree seedlings and assorted vegetable seeds, Technical extension provision through the County departments of agriculture, and Community cash grants to enable access to County government subsidized tractor services for tilling and ridging
Result 2: Provision of food and cash assistance to save lives and protect assets during humanitarian crisis
Achievements made so far:
  • Qurbani (livestock offtake and distribution for slaughter) during Eid in Garissa, Wajir and Mandera Counties
  • Emergency cash envelopes to communities affected by the 2010/2011 and 2016/2017 drought emergency in Mandera County

The ARDI Primary Focus

ARDI opened its Kenya office in 2018 following the registration by the NGO Board of Kenya as a national Non Governmental Organization. Over the years, the organization has built the capacity of community leaders and residents to resolve conflict and to address the underlying barriers to growth and stability of the region.
